Definition and specific features of business schools

A business school is a unique ecosystem at the crossroads of the academic and professional worlds.

What is the difference between business school and university?

The difference between a business school and a university lies primarily in their academic focus and teaching approach. A business school specializes in management, finance, marketing, entrepreneurship, leadership, and business administration, while a university offers a broader range of disciplines, including science, engineering, law, humanities, medicine, and social sciences.The fundamental distinction is that business schools typically emphasize professional development through internships, case studies, consulting projects, international experiences, and close connections with employers. Universities generally place greater emphasis on academic research and disciplinary breadth.
When comparing a business school and a university, neither option is inherently better. The right choice depends on your goals. Students seeking a career in management or business often value the professional network, industry exposure, and career-focused teaching offered by business schools. Those looking for multidisciplinary studies or research opportunities may prefer the wider academic environment of a university.

The missions of a business school

The primary mission of a business school is to train experienced managers and leaders with strong cross-functional skills. This involves teaching the fundamental subjects of commerce and management, such as finance, marketing, strategy, organizational management, accounting, and human resources.

The objective is to prepare students for management careers, whatever sector they aim to enter. Beyond academic knowledge, the emphasis is placed on international exposure, professional experience, and employability.

At emlyon, the Master in Management - Grande Ecole combines academic excellence, hands-on learning, professional exposure, progressive specialization, and international possibilities.

How to join a business school?

Admission pathways

Access to a business school is not limited to one route and adapts to different profiles and academic backgrounds. There are three main admission pathways:

  • After high school: directly after obtaining the French baccalauréat or an equivalent high school diploma, students take dedicated entrance exams, often in addition to registering on the Parcoursup platform.
  • After preparatory classes: the traditional route to enter a Master in Management - Grande Ecole is through two years of economic and commercial preparatory classes, followed by the BCE or Ecricome entrance exams.
  • Direct entry or admission based on previous qualifications: students holding a BTS, DUT, Bachelor’s degree, Licence, or equivalent qualification can enter a program in the second, third, or fourth year through a competitive selection process.

Selection criteria

Business schools select students based on a balance between academic performance and personal potential:

  • Academic record: grades from high school and higher education are carefully reviewed;
  • Written exams: general knowledge MCQs, logic tests, summary exercises, and language tests are used to assess candidates’ level;
  • Oral exams and motivation interviews: personality tests and the presentation of a professional project allow students to demonstrate their open-mindedness, ambition, and ability to integrate into school life.

Funding your studies

The cost of studying at a business school is a significant investment, but several schemes exist to make training more accessible:

  • Apprenticeship programs: the host company covers tuition fees and the student receives a salary;
  • Excellence scholarships, CROUS grants or regional grants: based on social or academic criteria, it is possible to fund all or part of the program;
  • Student loans: schools may work with banking partners to offer preferential loans.

What skills are taught in business school?

A business school teaches a combination of technical, analytical, and interpersonal skills needed to succeed in modern organizations. Students develop expertise in management, marketing, finance, entrepreneurship, and financial analysis, while learning how businesses operate, grow, and adapt to market change.

Beyond academic knowledge, business schools emphasize leadership, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, negotiation, and project management. Through case studies, internships, business simulations, and consulting projects, students gain practical experience and strengthen their ability to make informed decisions.

One of the most valuable outcomes of business education is the development of strategic decision-making skills. Students learn how to analyze data, evaluate risks, identify job openings, and design effective business strategies. By combining technical expertise with influence and critical thinking, business schools prepare graduates for careers in management, consulting, finance, marketing, entrepreneurship, and other business-related fields.

What can you find in a business school?

Course organization and teaching approach

Teaching in business schools is highly active and oriented toward the real world. Theoretical courses constantly sit alongside practical scenarios, beyond commercial education alone.

Students are placed at the heart of action through group projects, real-life case studies, business games, business management simulations, consulting projects, and compulsory internships.

International exposure is essential, through double degrees with partner universities, exchange semesters on campuses abroad, and courses taught in English. emlyon’s Master & MSc programs are taught in English and designed for French and international students seeking expertise in management, finance, strategy, data, marketing, and related fields.

What is a business degree?

A business degree is an academic qualification that provides a comprehensive overview of how organizations operate and create value. A degree in business typically covers key areas such as management, finance, marketing, accounting, economics, entrepreneurship, strategy, and business analytics.

Students gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience through case studies, projects, internships, and interactions with companies. In addition to technical expertise, business programs help develop transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and decision-making.

A business degree can lead to careers in management, consulting, finance, marketing, business development, entrepreneurship, operations, supply chain, and digital transformation.

What are the career paths after business school?

A degree from a reputable business school opens the door to a wide range of sectors and careers, both in France and internationally.

Accessible sectors and careers

Graduates mainly move into finance, marketing, communication, consulting, human resources, supply chain, new technologies, and luxury. Their generalist training enables them to reinvent themselves throughout their career, whether in a start-up, a large corporation, or by creating their own company.

The most common roles held by business school graduates include:

The impact of the network and the degree

The value of a degree does not lie only in its name, but also in the strength of its network and the recognition of its quality. The alumni network of a school of business is a powerful professional springboard for finding internships, a job, a business partner, or a co-founder.

In addition, the international reputation of a school is recognized through major accreditations such as EQUIS, AACSB, and AMBA, which are guarantees of academic excellence, professionalization, and research quality. These labels are strong signals for recruiters around the world:

  • AACSB: the oldest accreditation, focused on teaching and research quality;
  • EQUIS: a European accreditation assessing an entire institution, from governance to corporate relations;
  • AMBA: an accreditation specifically focused on Master’s and MBA programs.

Less than 1% of business schools worldwide have obtained the triple crown, meaning all three accreditations. emlyon’s rankings and accreditations confirm that the school holds EQUIS, AACSB and AMBA accreditations, and is recognized in French and international rankings.

Professional integration and salaries

One of the main arguments in favor of business schools is their strong professional integration rate. Just after graduation, more than 85% of graduates find a job in less than 6 months.

Starting salaries vary depending on the level of the degree, the reputation of the school, and the sector of activity. They represent a tangible return on investment for the years of study:

  • Bachelor: from €32,000 to €38,000 gross per year;
  • Master in Management - Grande Ecole: from €38,000 to €45,000 gross per year;
  • Advanced Master: from €40,000 to €48,000 gross per year;
  • MBA: above €60,000 gross per year.

Career progression is generally fast, moving toward positions of responsibility, depending on the international openings each graduate is able to seize.

Is business school worth it?

Yes, business school is worth it for many students seeking to accelerate their career, develop in-demand business skills, and expand their professional network. A business school provides training in management, finance, marketing, entrepreneurship while offering internships, international experiences, and connections with employers.

The value of a business school depends on your professional goals, the quality of the program, and the balance between expected career outcomes and tuition fees. Graduates often benefit from stronger employability, access to leadership opportunities, and broader career prospects across multiple industries.

For students looking to gain practical experience, build a professional network, and increase their long-term earning potential, business school can be a worthwhile investment. Ultimately, it is worth it when the program aligns with your ambitions and supports your path toward professional success and career growth.
