The difference between a BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) and a MiM (Master in Management) lies mainly in the level of study, admission requirements, and career outcomes. A BBA is an undergraduate business degree designed for students after high school, providing a broad foundation in management, finance, marketing, and entrepreneurship through practical learning and internships.

A MiM is a postgraduate degree pursued after a bachelor’s degree, offering more advanced management knowledge, greater specialization, and stronger analytical and strategic skills.

In a BBA vs MiM comparison, a BBA prepares students for entry-level business roles, while a MiM is aimed at graduates seeking higher-responsibility positions and accelerated career progression. The right choice depends on a student’s academic background, professional goals, and desired level of expertise.

Key points about BBA vs MiM

  • The BBA and the Master in Management (MiM) reflect two different study strategies in business school: the BBA offers a practical, international post-secondary pathway, while the PGE provides a more selective master’s-level track.

  • The BBA quickly builds core management skills, with strong international exposure, internships, study-abroad opportunities and gradual entry into the job market.

  • The Master in Management develops advanced skills in management, strategy and consulting, often following a preparatory class or a selective entrance exam.

  • Both programmes can lead to careers as managers, consultants or business experts, with further growth opportunities through an MBA or executive education.

Understanding these two major business degrees: BBA vs MiM

Business schools offer two main academic paths for students pursuing management education: the BBA and the MiM. These degrees differ in academic level, duration, admissions requirements, curriculum, teaching methods, and career outcomes, making it essential to understand their differences when planning a business career.

What is a BBA?

A Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) is an undergraduate business degree, typically completed in 3 to 4 years. Following the Anglo-American model, it combines business fundamentals, applied learning, and international exposure. Many programs include exchange programs, internships, work placements, and double-degree opportunities.

A BBA is ideal for students who want to:

  • Study business directly after high school

  • Gain practical, career-ready experience during the degree

  • Build an international profile early

  • Develop capabilities in marketing, management, sales, and entrepreneurship

Typical teaching methods include: internships, group projects, business case studies, presentations, collaborative work, and experiential learning. Courses are often taught partly or entirely in English, especially at internationally oriented business schools.

What is a MiM?

A MiM (Master in Management) is a graduate-level management degree for students who already hold a bachelor’s degree. Highly recognized in Europe and globally, the MiM prepares students for careers in all areas of management, including the most demanding fields such as consulting, finance, and strategy.

MiM programs typically combine:

  • Core management training

  • Advanced analytical and strategic coursework

  • Electives or specialization tracks

  • Internships and real-world consulting projects

  • Academic exchanges or double degrees

The MiM is often the natural next step after a BBA or other undergraduate degree for students seeking stronger specialization, a competitive graduate profile, and access to high-responsibility roles. In France, the Programme Grande École (PGE) is usually translated as a MiM for international audiences, aligning with graduate-level management education worldwide.

How do BBA and MiM programs differ ?

BBA programs (Bachelor of Business Administration) are undergraduate degrees designed for students starting their higher education, usually right after high school. They focus on business administration fundamentals, including marketing, finance, management, accounting, and operations, with practical learning, internships, and international exposure.

MiM programs (Master in Management) are postgraduate degrees for students who already hold a bachelor’s degree. The curriculum emphasizes advanced management, strategic decision-making, leadership, and specialization in areas like consulting, finance, or international business.

In the difference between business administration vs management, the BBA builds broad, job-ready expertise for early career roles, while the MiM develops higher-level analytical and managerial expertise for competitive, strategic positions. In short, a BBA provides foundational business knowledge, whereas a MiM prepares graduates for leadership and advanced career paths.

International exposure

International exposure is one of the most important criteria when choosing a business degree because it affects career mobility, cross-cultural fluency, global employability, and access to international opportunities. Both the BBA and the MiM can offer strong international value, but they do so in different ways.

A BBA usually provides international exposure earlier and more continuously. Students may spend semesters abroad, complete internships in other countries, or study in English from the start. In many schools, international mobility is central to the identity of the BBA.

A MiM also offers strong global opportunities, but often in a more structured and specialized way. These may include:

International comparison points include:

  • Study abroad opportunities: often broader and longer in a BBA

  • International academic partnerships: strong in both degrees, depending on the school

  • Language of instruction: often mostly English in a BBA, while the MiM is taught in English for students admitted through the international admissions

  • Global employer access: often stronger at postgraduate level in a MiM, especially for top-tier firms

If your goal is to build a global profile from the earliest stage of your education, a BBA may offer more immediate international immersion. If your goal is to access global employers through a graduate-level brand and network, a MiM may be the stronger option.

Career opportunities and further study

For career paths, the better degree depends on your goals. A BBA degree  is better for students who want to build broad business capabilities early and enter the job market faster in areas such as sales, marketing, business development, and operations. A MiM , which is a master’s degree, is better for students aiming for more advanced career paths in consulting, finance, strategy, tech, marketing, and management. In simple terms, a BBA offers earlier access to entry-level business roles, while a MiM leads to more specialized and higher-responsibility opportunities. If you want practical experience quickly, choose a BBA in business administration. If you want stronger academic depth and better access to competitive graduate careers, a MiM is usually the better option.

How to apply to these programs

Business school admissions follow several distinct pathways, depending on your academic background and the program you are targeting whether a BBA or a MiM.

Main post-secondary entrance exams

Three joint entrance exams allow students to enter business schools directly after completing their secondary education (baccalauréat):

  • Concours Sésame : covers logical and numerical reasoning, language proficiency testing, and a motivation interview. Grants access to Bachelor programs at several schools, including emlyon business school.

  • Concours Accès : includes document synthesis, logical and mathematical reasoning, an English oral exam, and a personality interview. Used for direct entry into 3-year Bachelor programs.

  • Concours Ecricome : comprises a general knowledge MCQ, English proficiency tests, and an individual interview. Accepted by several leading business schools as a standard admissions pathway.

Post-Secondary, Preparatory Class, or Parallel Admission: What Are the Differences?

Admission to business schools and programs such as the Master in Management (MiM) follows three main routes: post-secondary (post-bac), preparatory class, and parallel/transfer admission. Each pathway suits a different academic profile and background.

Post-baccalaureate admission allows students to enter a business school directly after secondary school, bypassing the preparatory class route. It applies to BBA programs, with selection based on application files and/or entrance exams (such as the Sésame exam for emlyon). This is the fastest route into a business school program.

MiM admissions through the international pathway (program taught in English): a degree awarded by a nationally accredited higher education institution outside of France; at least three years of study at a nationally accredited higher education institution outside of France (licence, bachelor's or Benke); and at least two years of study outside of France during the final stage of the programme. Applicants can apply either directly or via the Join A School in France platform.

Grande Ecole after a French preparatory class admission remains the traditional pathway to the most selective schools. After two years of intensive preparation, students sit competitive entrance exams to gain entry into a MiM.

Undergraduate Business School admission is designed for students who have already completed a degree (equivalent to 2 to 4 years of higher education). Through exams such as Passerelle or Tremplin, they can enter a MiM at a business school. At emlyon, parallel admission to the MiM is open to students holding a Bac+3, Bac+4, or Bac+5 delivered in France  via a direct admissions process.

How to prepare for business school entrance exams?

Success in business school entrance exams whether for a Bachelor, BBA, or Master in Management requires structured, methodical preparation. To maximize your chances of admission, it is essential to anticipate both the written and oral components of each exam while presenting the strongest possible profile.

Start by familiarizing yourself with the exam format. Review past papers, practice MCQs regularly, and identify the specific expectations of each exam. At the same time, give particular attention to the oral interview, which plays a decisive role in the selection process. Prepare a clear, compelling narrative around your career goals, research the school's values, and rehearse through mock interview sessions.

Your academic record also carries significant weight. Grades from your final two years of secondary school are essential, but extracurricular experience can be the deciding factor.

To strengthen your application further, consider:

  • Enriching your file with internships, personal projects, or associative commitments

  • Attending intensive preparation programs (private prep courses or school-run workshops)

  • Leveraging online resources such as preparation platforms, practice apps, and mock tests
