30 years of share buybacks by SBF 120 companies
This ninth issue of “Supporting Evidence” provides an overview of share buybacks by SBF 120 companies over a long period. The study focuses on the largest listed French companies between 1999 and 2024 and documents a practice that now occupies an important place in contemporary financial policies, and is the subject of recurring debates and controversies. The aim is neither to condemn nor to defend share buybacks, but to establish their main orders of magnitude, major historical trends, and concentration dynamics.

The reformer’s paradox
Among the many commentaries that followed the death of Pope Francis, one observation came up repeatedly: this reform-minded pope, critical of Rome’s centralization and the power of the Curia, is said to have governed in a centralizing—if not authoritarian—way himself in order to impose his views. The contradiction has been highlighted between the principles he advocated—collegiality, decentralization, synodality—and a governing practice that concentrated key decisions in the hands of the pope.
