The “sécurité sociale” is the French healthcare system, also called CPAM (“Caisse Primaire d’Assurance Maladie”) operated through the offical website ameli.fr. The healthcare system reimburses covers 15 to 80% of your medical expenses if you have registered.
Health reimbursements in France can be broken down into two parts:
- The mandatory part: covered by Sécurité Sociale
- The complimentary part: also called ‘ticket modérateur’, which remains at your expense (or your "mutuelle" if you have signed up for it).
Check out the downloadable document called “The French health Insurance system_ENG” for a better understanding of this !
Once you are registered with the Sécurité Sociale, you will receive your “Carte Vitale”, which you need to have with you during your medical appointments.
The French “Sécurité Sociale” is mandatory for non-European students enrolled in a French school.
If you are staying more than 90 days in France, then you have to register to the CPAM through a dedicated website (available in English and French): etudiant-etranger.ameli.fr
The registration to CPAM has to be done after your administrative registration at emlyon business school is complete, as your enrolment certificate will be required.
If you are staying less than 90 days, you have no obligation to register to the French insurance plan.
However, we strongly encourage you to subscribe to an international insurance back in your country that will cover you during your stay in France.
European Students/ Swiss nationals must have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). If not, they have to subscribe to the “Sécurité Sociale”. Your card must cover you for at least the whole academic year.
Our insurance partner HEYME can help you with your registration to the Sécurité Sociale. You will find all the information about them in the dedicated section.
A “mutuelle” in France is an additional health insurance you can subscribe to as a complement to your healthcare expenses reimbursed by the French Social Security. This service is not free and requires annual subscriptions. It covers all of part of the medical expenses that remain for you to pay (known as the "ticket modérateur" in French) once the French Social Security system has reimbursed its share. It includes doctors and dentists fees, optical expenses, fee surcharges, hospital charges and more.

Housing
It's not easy to find an accommodation, especially in French cities. However, there are many different solutions. The first tip is to start your search as soon as possible:
- Don't wait until you are in France to start looking for housing. Submit your request before you leave, whether it is for a room in a CROUS residence, in a student residence or in a private residence.
- Don't hesitate to send in several requests for student lodging to increase your chances of finding a flat or a room quickly.
- Try to find student rental accommodation that is furnished, especially if you are in France for a short period.
- In general, be careful and make sure the organization offering the lodging is reliable. Never send money without first signing a lease and speaking directly with the organization.
- You will need to find a property that fits your budget and with bills that you can afford to pay every month.
- When living in France, you will have to find an apartment on your own.

City of Lyon
Lyon: an enticing European metropolis
Since the Renaissance, the banks of the two rivers, the Rhône and the Saône, that flow through the city, the Fourvière basilica that dominates the city centre, and the Old part of Lyon, are sights that make Lyon an extremely pleasant place to live in.
Lyon is not only home to many of France’s large corporations which now operate worldwide; it also attracts many international firms and organizations.
For centuries, the city has been a trading center at the cross-roads between Northern Europe and the Mediterranean South. While its entrepreneurial culture dates back to the silk manufacturers in the early 19th century, its present dynamism is based on a diversified range of modern industries: energy, chemicals, vaccines, laser technology, etc.
Ranked again this year as one of France's top 5 student cities, Lyon offers students from all over the world a quality living and studying environment. With over 150,000 students, Lyon is a major European university hub.

- Many sports meetings: The World Rugby Championship, the World Gymnastics Championship, and other yearly events such as the Lyon Tennis Grand Prix, Lyon Marathon.
Lyon is well known for its gastronomy and the quality of its food. Since the early 20th century, Lyon has been widely considered as the French capital of gastronomy. In 1935, the French gastronomy writer Curnonsky, who was then the most celebrated in the trade, along with Marcel E. Grancher, wrote a book called “Lyon, the World Capital of Gastronomy”. Lyon gastronomy is often a quite simple way of cooking with local products. Typical dishes from Lyon might sometimes be rich, but Lyon's gastronomy is a high quality traditional cuisine.
