Published on 2023.02.02
For the past 3 years, emlyon business school have been collaborating with Roland Berger on the publishing of several widely acclaimed reports on ICT industries. This year we continue to implement this digitalization strategy and make new contributions to global digitalization process, by jointly publishing the new report on Global IPv6 Development Report 2022.
With the advent of new communication and information technologies, everything in the world is more closely connected, forming a huge network that bridges people and things. Future-shaping technologies such as AI, 5G, cloud, and IoT are like threads that connect us together.
A fundamental enabler lies at the core of all these technologies: the IP address. It gives devices a "key" that they need to connect to the network. The explosive growth of intelligent devices has exhausted the available IPv4 addresses, and IPv6 was introduced in 1998 to solve this problem once and for all. In addition to providing basic IP addresses, IPv6 provides higher-quality and smarter connections through the combination of emerging technologies, namely IPv6 Enhanced Innovation, offering more future possibilities, accelerating the deployment of advanced business applications like 5G, cloud, and industrial IoT and providing the basis for the digitalization of all industries.
Over the past decade, multiple initiatives at both global and regional level have been implemented to facilitate a coordinated transition to IPv6 for the entire internet ecosystem. At this moment, we find it necessary to reflect on how the world has progressed in this transition and summarize the concrete socio-economic value IPv6 Enhanced Innovation have created. We think a better understanding of the benefits of IPv6 and IPv6 Enhanced Innovation can help the society in realizing the critical role that the technology plays. Based on the report in 2021, we include two new dimensions of performance and innovation for the Global IPv6 Development Index, and a quantitative analysis of the economic impact of IPv6 Enhanced Innovation in various industries is conducted. On this basis, we calculated the index for 92 countries and performed an in-depth analysis of the development of IPv6 in 3 benchmark countries and 15 countries around the world and puts forward tailored recommendations. It is our strong belief that digital technology will play a more and more important role in driving the digital economy and the world forward. The ultimate transition to IPv6 and IPv6 Enhanced Innovation will be the fundamental enabler of digital economy transformation and improved social governance.
